The Boys’ Brigade
was founded in the year 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith. The 1st
Coleraine Company was formed in 1898.
Over the past 108
years thousands of boys from the town have progressed through the ranks.
Past captains include Tommy Glenn, Bertie Edgar, Frank Walls, Jack Murdoch
and Stephen McCann.
The junior section
was started in the 1960’s by Kay Benson. Mabel Hartin took charge soon after
and was in charge for over 30 years.
As with any
organisation there have been an army of officers dedicated to the objective
and work of the B.B. These include Marcus McMains, Kenny Millar, Noel
Wisener, Cecil Cochrane, Trevor Wisener, Robert Simpson, Myrtle Mitchell and
Mervyn Adams.
1st Coleraine B.B.
meets on Thursday nights. Traditionally there would have been an emphasis on
discipline but in recent years this has been relaxed and there is now a big
priority on fun activities. These activities include badge work and games.
